Cogeneration and Trigeneration Systems
The term cogeneration refers to the simultaneous production and consumption of multiple forms of secondary energy — such as electrical energy, mechanical energy, and thermal energy — from a single source, which can be either fossil or renewable, through an integrated system.
In summary...
Cogeneration allows for the combined production of electricity and heat by recovering energy that would otherwise be wasted.
Trigeneration, an evolution of cogeneration, also integrates the production of cooling, thus providing three different forms of energy from a single fuel source.
Thanks to these technologies, over 80% of the fuel’s energy is converted into useful energy, bringing economic, environmental, and operational benefits.
Cogeneration and trigeneration systems can operate with different energy sources: natural gas, LPG, biogas, diesel, or vegetable oils, and today they represent mature, reliable, and economically advantageous solutions.
Cogeneration:
Cogeneration represents an advanced technology that allows overall energy efficiency to be increased in a plant by optimizing resource use and reducing waste.
To fully understand the benefits of cogeneration, it is useful to consider the efficiency coefficient, a parameter that expresses the ratio between the energy produced and the amount of fuel used.
In the case of a car engine, for example, efficiency indicates the ratio between the kilometers traveled and the fuel consumed. Similarly, in large engines for power generation, the efficiency coefficient represents the ratio between the kilowatt-hours generated and the fuel used, thus highlighting the effectiveness of cogeneration in maximizing energy yield.
Thanks to thirty years of experience in the energy and environmental sector, Veneto Energie S.p.A. is able to install cogeneration plants powered by gas, diesel, or vegetable fuels, enabling significant energy savings and complete self-sufficiency, always in compliance with ethical standards and with the goal of greater environmental protection.
Cogeneration processes and plants are designed and built using advanced technologies, through the development of custom systems and careful management of logistics and storage, aimed at ensuring proper environmental development and optimization of production processes.

Trigeneration:
Trigeneration consists of the simultaneous production of electricity, heat, and cooling using a single fuel source. Compared to traditional thermoelectric power plants, which convert only one-third of the fuel’s energy into electricity and disperse the rest as heat, this technology enables optimization of energy efficiency.
An effective approach to improving performance is Combined Heat and Power production (C.H.P. – Combined Heat and Power), which allows for the conversion of more than 4/5 of the fuel’s energy into usable energy, delivering significant economic and environmental benefits.
Co-trigeneration systems can be designed to operate with various primary heat sources and today represent technologically mature and economically advantageous solutions. The main possible configurations include:
– Cogeneration systems with fossil fuels
– Trigeneration systems with fossil fuels
– Co-trigeneration with solar thermal systems
– Co-trigeneration with biogas
– Hybrid systems of cogeneration and trigeneration
