Biomass plants

The term “biomass” refers to the biodegradable fraction of products, waste, and residues of biological origin from agriculture (including plant and animal substances), forestry, related industries, fishing, and aquaculture, as well as the biodegradable portion of industrial and municipal waste.

This definition includes a wide variety of materials, both virgin and residual, derived from agricultural or industrial processes. These materials can appear in different physical states and have a wide range of calorific values.

Depending on the type of biomass, the most suitable technology for its energy recovery, the size of the plant, and the final uses of the produced energy (which can be thermal, electrical, or both), it is possible to adopt various customized plant solutions.

This energy is obtained through specific conversion processes such as combustion, gasification, pyrolysis, fermentation, and anaerobic digestion, which make it possible to harness organic materials while reducing environmental impact.

The company has built several cogeneration plants powered by vegetable oil, capable of producing electricity and heat in facilities with capacities ranging from a few hundred kWe up to 1–2 MWe, located close to the thermal users to optimize the overall efficiency of the system.

Vegetable oil used in these plants is a natural biofuel obtained through the pressing of oilseeds such as sunflower, rapeseed, and soy. The use of these renewable fuels enables sustainable energy production, contributing to the decarbonization of the energy sector.
